Green Building
Green building is a systematic approach that covers every step of design and construction from land use and site planning to materials selection, energy efficiency and indoor air quality. Green homes are more comfortable, durable, and healthier for your family.
Form follows function when it comes to design, meaning that construction should be tailored to the environment in which the house is built. We will work with you to select the best home site and design a house that makes the best use of your land.
Controlling the movement of heat, air, and moisture involves every part of the building and everyone on the building team. As much as 25% of your heat loss is just through insufficiently sealed doors, window and penetrations through the exterior of your home. The same applies to energy spent on air conditioning. Air leaks in the building envelope represent a significant loss of energy and open the door to moisture damage inside wall and ceiling cavities.
Energy loses some of its potential each time it is converted from one form to another, which explains why passive solar heat is much more efficient than electric heat. Designing a home with more windows on the south side of the home and fewer on the north side is a simple way to save 10-40% on winter heating bills depending on how well insulated the house is. The sun is low in the southern sky in winter and shines through south facing windows to heat our homes. In the summer, our overhangs are sized to shade those same windows helping to keep the home cool. An added benefit, lots of natural light tends to make people happier at home.
